Eru Dangerspiel: Great News For The Modern Man Live CD/DVD
By Lydia Jenkin
While Warren Maxwell has gone on to great things with Little Bushmen and Rio Hemopo has been lending his musical skills to a variety of acts including Fat Freddys, drummer Riki Gooch has been making a name for himself as Eru Dangerspiel. He released his debut solo studio album in 2008, a percussion-based project complemented with many of NZ’s most illustrious musicians. In 2009 he decided to take this project ‘live’. Thinking big he put together a line up of over 30 passionate Kiwi musicians plus a small choir – along with visual projections, creating a grand concert on the stage of Auckland Town Hall for just the one night, last August. The CD here is the live audio recording of that concert, the DVD the same but with pictures.
While a DVD is never quite going to match the spine-tingling quality of that gigantic live mash up of soul, funk, and ‘sexual jazz’, it does do a superb job of representing the energy and quality of the musicians who took part. The seven tracks which appear on the CD and DVD aren’t quite the entire concert, but full credit must go to live recording engineer Neil Baldock and the seven person camera crew for capturing very high quality sound and footage from the widely-praised two hour-plus show.
