Heather Boyed: Am I Still In Love With You
By Tony Parker
Heather Boyed possesses one of those voices that has just enough twang to satisfy diehard country fans – while also handling those country/pop crossovers with ease – which is what this debut release is all about. All but the self-penned title track are well known covers that encompass '60s pop, country rock and modern country and therein lies a problem. A lot of this material is so familiar that adding anything new proves difficult and although Boyed makes some game attempts, her individuality does not always shine through. Arranged, produced and recorded by Mike McCarthy at Manuka Sounds the album has a polished sound due mainly to an ever-present keyboard providing the main colouring. Pedal steel, fiddle and mandolin may have been better choices to complement Boyed's vocals, although the presence of Rob Galley on guitar does add just the right amount of twang. 'Am I Still In Love With You' shows Boyed to be a talented country singer who could do with some more adventurous material and a cracking country band.
