DARK WATER: Dark Water EP

By Ania Glowacz
Formed only late last year, New Plymouth’s Dark Water certainly deliver on their instantly apparent promise. This does not sound like a debut and they have few local contemporaries I can readily name. To reference Pearl Jam wouldn’t be completely misleading, and Queen’s Cue, is seriously channeling Nirvana. Dark Water is Merran Dixon on bass and backing vocals, Ric Forbes on guitar, Dan Christiansen on drums and singer/guitarist Nathan Waipouri, who wrote all the material. Based on this initial offering the four have a great future ahead of them. Opener Flounder hooks you in straight away with quasi-Tool environment (echoed on Cosmic Tree). Liquid Love is immediately engaging with its melodic hooks and instant sing-along-ability. With only five songs this band hit their mark, and you won’t know what hit you. Mixed by Allan Steedman and recorded at King Street Studios in New Plymouth, this is dynamic alternative rock with strong songwriting, hooks and warm melodies.
