SOULSION: My My Look At The Time
By Dave Gideon
Auckland-based five-piece Soulsion placed second at the 2008 Battle of the Bands competition, and have since become known for their sweaty, funky live sets. Their debut album proves a solid rockin’ number, wasting no time heading into a groovy rock style with first track Funk Shui. Recorded at Roundhead Studios in Auckland, the excellent production gives this the full wall of guitar sound it deserves, Pete Frances’ saxophone adding style to what could have been just another rock album. With sound vocals, solid rhythm section, tasteful effects, excellent guitar work, catchy and clear lyrics and riffs that work it’s comparisons to Slash, The Chillis or Maroon 5 that spring to mind. Opening track and Scratch The Surface had time on Radio Active and Kiwi FM liked The Vast Machine. My advice – get out and hear them live.
