Gate: A Republic of Sadness
By Simon Sweetman
Released only on vinyl, in a limited run of 1000 copies for the world, ‘A Republic Of Sadness’ is the first Gate album in over a decade. Michael Morley, known mostly for his work with The Dead C, is Gate and here, picking the nom-de-plume that he has used sporadically across his career to date, he layers guitar sounds and vocal drones over looped beats. The end sound is an album of six tracks that doesn’t quite fit into the dance or post-rock or ambient genres, but feeds into all three, in parts. There are traces of electronica and of a soundtrack/minimalist feel but it’s impossible to categorise beyond that – and, might I add, thankfully. The six tracks sprawl over 46 minutes, each between six and 10 minutes long and it all makes for a welcome return from an important musical voice, speaking here out the side of his mouth.
