Donna Muir: Beauty in the Ashes
By Tony Parker
Donna Muir is a singer/songwriter constantly searching for hope in the face of adversity with songs that reflect her concern for those less fortunate than the rest of us as they battle their way through life’s hardships. Certainly her Christian faith helps to keep the message positive and musically her piano-led adult pop/rock sound has some uplifting moments. Muir also has keen melodic sensibilities and uses them to good effect when combined with Jonny Spence’s production and keyboards, making for a reasonably strong 15-track (two remixes) disc. Where it falls down is the constant mid tempo piano/bass/drums backing, with the odd guitar solo or keyboard interlude providing any interest. This makes for an album that, although sounding polished and professional, lacks enough variety to make it truly appealing. Fans of contemporary adult singer/songwriters such as Sarah McLachlan, or our own Brooke Fraser, will likely find enough beauty here to interest them however.
