TESSA QUAYLE: Whisper Not
By Michael Flynn
Often heard around Wellington where she regularly performs with her
own quartet, Tessa Quayle has chosen to record a personal collection
of songs that she loves to both listen to and perform. It’s a well
crafted debut album full of fine arrangements with a refreshing take
on some well known jazz standards. Opening with Lullaby of Leaves
Quayle uses her interpretive skills warmly and shows great affection
for these songs. Her delivery of Horace Silver’s Lonely Woman is most
touching as she sings over a solitary bass line. Night in Tunisia is
another good example of this accomplished singer’s ability to blend
classic with contemporary with her vocalese improvisation of this well
known Dizzy Gillespie composition. Tessa is joined on the album by
some talented musicians whose playing compliments her throughout. Ben
Wilcock on piano, Nick Tipping on Bass, Reuben Bradley on drums and
Alexis French guests on trumpet. This is an engaging album and it
would be a shame for it to go unnoticed. The album was recorded at the
NZSM Concert Hall in Wellington and was mastered by Mike Gibson.
