Flip Grater: While I’m Awake I’m At War
By Amanda Mills
Flip Grater’s third album sees the former Christchurch artist moving
slightly into the area of the chanteuse rather than alt-folk
singer-songwriter. Not that Grater has stopped writing her own
material; on the contrary, the music here is some of her strongest,
from the countrified pop of Careful, to the self-reflection of My Old
Shoes, while her band (which includes Tim Guy, Chris O’Connor, Geoff
Maddock, LA Mitchell and Dianne Swann) all accent her talents with
their own formidable skills. ‘While I’m Awake I’m At War’ records
Grater baring her musical soul (also reflected in the sparse cover
photo, of her bare, unadorned self), and reveals a musician finding
her authentic voice, and re-fashioning her sound into something a bit
unexpected. A little bit Cat Power, a touch country, and a
considerable leap forward from her last record, this could be the
turning point for Flip Grater, and propel her music to a wider
audience. This would be a deserved success.
