Greg Fleming: Taken
By Simon Sweetman
‘Taken’ offers a chance for people to hear something new while
actually hearing something old. The album was put together from
sessions that took place between ’95-2003; this is the first release
of the record. It’s beautifully played and the songs are wee stories
from Fleming, something of an alt-country pioneer in NZ. The 11 tracks
breeze by with strong arrangements and tasteful playing – and deserve
to be heard. The bonus disc features a remastered version of Fleming’s
1993 debut as Greg Fleming and The Trains. The album was called
‘Ghosts Are White’, and here features 10 songs with a further 11 bonus
tracks. Unanswered Prayers has Paul Kelly’s economy of language in
telling the tale and She’s Got A Star could have been a lilting indie
radio hit. There’s a lot to take in here, beautifully packaged with
liner notes that tell the stories behind the individual songs as well
as this welcomed restoration package.
