Superturtle: About The Sun

By Shaun
“I’d like to dedicate a whole album and just sing every song about the
sun”, sings Darren McShane in this album’s slowburning beauty of a
title track. And at times I think he is. But to think this is a
‘light’ record is wrong. So too was my iPod, which called this music
industrial – go figure. What Earwig Studios’ supremo McShane has
created in actuality is a fine alt/indie pop record, layered with
sounds and hooks aplenty. Didn't Wanna Go There Tonight has a classic
NZ indie pop feel to it, soaked in Flying Nun with jagged guitar.
Valley Town taps into the sort of musical pedigree bands like Oasis
tried so desperately to conjure up. Actually a lot of this album has a
classic feel to it, recalling music generations past. Not just
musically, but also sound wise. A pointer perhaps to the recording
path as noted on the sleeve, to the point I feel obliged to reprint it
here – recorded to 2 inch, 24-track tape and mixed to half inch 2
track tape. Engineered, mixed and mastered analogue to CD. The
guitars, keys, drums and bass were tracked live as a band performance
too. And of course McShane ran the whole thing at Earwig Studios on
Auckland’s North Shore. The edgier rock track I Walked Into Your Space
and closer Sad Sack are also worth mentioning as must listens.
