Audiac: El Toroloco
By Jonny Carson
This second album from Melbourne-based band Audiac is a refreshing
reprieve from the wave of modern indie saturating the airwaves. The
brief was to create an album that utilised the technologies available
in the studio, rather than be limited by the live arena. Recorded at
Hothouse Studios in St. Kilda, the production is dynamically expansive
compared with the minimal approach to their debut release ‘No Come
Down’. Audiac have history in London and Dunedin, contributing to the
band’s musical diversity. Their style is decidedly ‘Brit-rock’
incorporating the rock & roll attitude of The Strokes and the
pop-mentality of The Killers, all the while tipping their hats to UK
classics The Smiths and The Beatles. Singer/guitarist/producer Andrew
Schraa has a measured languor to his vocal delivery, immediately
evident on album-opener and single Light Years Away. The album
journeys from the dreamy synth-laden introduction, through the
balls-out rock n’ roll of No Feelings, and the more bubbly,
pop-infused Outer Space. ‘El Toroloco’ is indicative of extensive
influences both musically and culturally, and while Audiac are not
dropping jaws they can be confident in having dropped a respectable
sophomore release.
