Listen Lisse: Pow Bang
By Kate Russell
Often referred to as a one woman band, Listen Lisse specialises in
folksy electro-acoustic tunes that will leave a bitter sweet memory in
your head. Lisa Deanna Ramirez McKendrick grew up in a small West
Coast town before moving to London, where she is still based, in ’98.
She started performing live in 2004, first just playing guitar, and
later introducing percussion, playing a kick pedal and floor tom live.
She plays every single instrument on ‘Pow Bang’, which was recorded in
a home studio and co-produced by Lisa. Clearly PJ Harvey influenced,
the 11 tracks are simple and raw, with no need for a great deal of
instrument backing. Songs such as Black and Gold Angels Dust and On
the Road have a mysterious and haunting vibe to them, while Raise Me
is brighter, with climbing guitars and interesting changes of tempo.
Capture sets out as another slow song, but breaks out into fast fuzzy
guitars to make it one of the standout tracks. Most are unpredictable,
and that perhaps, is what I like about this the most.
