BULLETPROOF: Soundtrack To Forever
By Adam
It may only be Jay ‘Bulletproof’ Monds’ third full-length but his CV
consisting of over a decade’s worth of 12" releases on labels such as
Critical Recordings, Project 51 and Klute’s Commerical Suicide has
established him as a local legend of drum ’n bass. ‘Soundtrack To
Forever’ has already been branded a local chart crossover for dubstep,
aided by a substantial list of homegrown and overseas talent. A
selection of both original works and remixes, it is a useful
tastemaker for those still not in tune with the expanding dubstep
movement in which the artist has set up shop. Bulletproof is most
effective when he fits his production nous around his numerous guests,
which range from the legendary Stamina MC to the licks of Cobra Khan’s
Milon Williams. His initial foray into two-step riddims are
inquisitive sound constructions, with edgy bassline builds that don’t
go too subterranean or implement mind-numbing nonsensical bass
demolition. The dark minimal errands of Risque and subsequent cut
Empire nod to two-step workings of Bulletproof’s earlier post-techstep
‘Neurofunk’ production. Oozing with sub bass, the best track here is
the second-to-last Samcro, sequentially too late in the piece.
