Ylang Ylang: Nunuku
By Bing Turkby
Ylang Ylang is the musical moniker of Martin Langlands. The title
track of his new CD is inspired by the principles of non-violence
espoused by the Moriori – Nunuku’s Law. It’s an ancient principle
being expressed in a modern way, as Langland’s music is of the
electronic variety. He describes it as a mixture of “dub, two-step,
electro, technofolk, house and ambient”, which is handy as I don’t
have the experience to discriminate those elements from the songs.
Being such a mixture it sounds like well-produced, smooth electronica,
with the only weak link being the vocals, which are at times just a
little too uneven to suit the smoothness of the music. Overall it’s a
tidy album, easy on the ear at home-listening volumes, fun to listen
to through headphones, and presumably mind-altering at festival/club
volumes.
