Paul Winders and The Goodness: You Can Have It All
By Amanda Mills
A Dunedin scene stalwart, Winders has been a member of the Verlaines
since 1991. ‘You Can Have It All’ comes nine years after his debut
album, ‘E Minor’ with three-piece Valve, on Dunedin’s Arclife label.
The Goodness include a number of fellow Dunedin musicians including
Kiri Winders (My Deviant Daughter), Jeff Harford (Bored Games),
Stephan Stedman (Alpha State) and Stephen Hayes. The songs reflect the
personal difficulties Winders has faced with the loss of his wife, but
he has surrounded his melancholy in the summery tones of his music
with songs like the upbeat You, and the chiming Winter Son. Best of
the tracks is Any Man which strongly recalls the jingle-jangle of late
’80s-early ’90s ‘Dunedin sound’ alt-pop. Winders’ material is easy on
the ear, but occasionally misses the mark, becoming aural wallpaper
and fading into the background. That’s not to say there aren’t strong
songs here – the radio-friendly and rocking Insomnia picks the pace up
nicely, a good alternative to the quieter moments. It was recorded and
mixed by Tex Houston at his Albany St Studios in Dunedin and mastered
by Mike Stoodley.
