The Furys: Anthology
By Jacob Connor
Twenty years: that's a lot of guitar strings and pints of beer. The Furys were an Auckland-based good time pub rock outfit headed by Dave McLean. This retrospective compilation contains a roughly even split of live and studio recordings and a booklet detailing the band's history. The music is old time rock and roll of the sort that Bob Seager liked, including covers of the Animals and the Easybeats. Recording quality is variable with lo-fi and demo inclusions. The odd studio track retains mistakes and seems to feature Dave singing drunk. While the tunes are MOR-ish, the band hit their straps with R n' B and barrelhouse boogie numbers that demonstrate their ability to get a venue hopping. There's a real sense of local history here Ð cuts from the deceased Gluepot transplant the smoke-and-sticky-carpet atmosphere to the present, and this will undoubtedly be a valuable souvenir to those who were there at the time but can't recall what happened.
