Kasium : Premonition
By Kate Foster
‘Premonition’ a self released EP by Auckland duo Kasium, is described in the bio
as ‘grunge’ and ‘alternative’ and for the first time in a long while, I’m satisfied to be
able to agree with this claim. Conjuring images of plaid, lank hair, Krist Novoselic
hitting himself in the head with his own Bass, the movie Singles…ahh it’s all flooding
back. ‘Premonition’ is sludgy and divine; undoubtedly heavy it is still warm, familiar
and easy to listen to. Closing my Eyes is an extremely catchy song which surely will gain
airplay on New Zealand’s rock-based stations soon and All Alone stands out as being
a perfect archetype of the genre. Admittedly, I got a little lost with the closing track,
Bubblegum clocking in at the six minute mark, with samples, swirling gats, monotone
and screamed dual vocals, while immaculately produced and realised, it just wasn’t my
thing. Put simply, if you enjoy Alice in Chains and Nirvana at its moodiest then it’s a no-
brainer for you to check out this EP.
