TRIPTYCH TRIO: Round The Bend
By Michael Flynn
Triptych Trio describe themselves as ‘a hard hitting bunch of musicians from Wellington’. The group comprising of Nick Granville (guitar), Ben Wilcock (keys) and Ian Parker (drums) give a tight swinging performance throughout this debut album of funky jazz originals. They’re right, it’s full of hard hitting arrangements with some nice interplay. The trio’s sound has drawn comparisons to American great John Scofield and I can see where that comes from with Granville’s sharp sounding mastery of his instrument. I also hear some Grant Green in his playing, especially on the title track and Mofki, where he is joined by Rodger Fox who plays some absolutely sizzling stuff. The explosive Get It provides more evidence of just how tight this band is. Nice inventive exchanges can be heard between Granville and Wilcock here whilst the punctuated fills from Parker wraps it up nicely. The recording (at NZSM) and mixing was by Richard Caigou.
