THE FALSE DMITRYS: Demons Are Everywhere
By Ania Glowacz
This is rough, raw and industrial, distinctly low-fi and deliberately disjointed, you need serious patience or Special K to get through this 18-track album. The False Dmitrys get another DIY album out every few years and here as a four-piece, are a band with a few things to express in amongst the blunt-ness (deliberate pun). And the concept is great: Monster Bait, Pirates With Vaseline, Molested By Puppets, Die My Pretties, Scraping Dried Vomit Off Concrete Walls (natural segue?), there’s humour and entertainment aplenty. Parts of it are like the Residents, and really, six albums later, these guys are still pulling “it off” (or so they claim). It may be indulgent but certainly not a yawn fest. You could say they’re helping keep genuine alternative/underground/industrial/unexplained experiments alive, and for that alone they deserve recognition.
