POP MECHANIX: Now Then: One Hit Windows
By Shaun Chait
This wonderfully packaged CD incorporates 13 classic Pop Mechanix tracks remastered. Included are lovingly presented postcards highlighting Pop Mechanix cover artwork over the years, making this a real visual as well as aural treat. For those unfamiliar with the ’80s musical landscape, Pop Mechanix were a bordering-on-success-but-never-really-got-there outfit based around the songwriting of Paul Scott. One time bandmates included Peter Warren (DD Smash), regular NZM guitar contributor Mark Bell and singers Andrew Snoid (Swingers, Coconut Rough) and Dick Driver. There was also a fair Split Enz connection, including manager Mike Chunn. Some of the tunes that came out of this act, synth/post-punk/new wave bands of today would give their guitarist for! Instead they were destined to remain legendary in Christchurch and fondly recalled in other pockets of NZ. This compilation provides the singles highlights, remastered by Paul Scott with Andrew Black. Now, Holidays, Cowboys and Art School Bop are worth checking out even for first time listeners.
