RAASHI MALIK: EP
By Amanda Mills
‘EP’ is the debut release from Raashi Malik, a Wellington musician of Indian descent best known until now for her vocal work on Rhombus’ albums. Work on ‘EP’ began In 2006 Malik and her husband Rhian Sheehan travelled to India where they recorded with prominent musicians, returning to Wellington to complete the EP with other local talents like Steve Bremner (Strike) and Thomas Voyce (Rhombus) and Jess Chambers. ‘EP’ is a mix of traditional and modern, beginning with Ubo Jhada, Malik’s adaptation of a traditional Nepali folk song, and concluding with Alibag, a dark, slow instrumental that is the highlight of the EP. Not all the tracks are as successful, and ‘EP’ doesn’t grab attention on the first listen, but by the third or fourth the instrumentation draws you in. Raashi Malik has a smooth and melodic voice, counterbalanced nicely with the haunting sounds of the Indian instruments used, especially on the very pretty Clouds and the tabla-driven Patience.
