JEREMY MASON: Distorted Vision EP

By Amanda Mills
Alternative folk does not usually have a lot in common with alt-punk, but now there is a link: Jeremy Mason. Mason’s work as bassist in Dunedin based alt-punk band Kill the Fake Patient is somewhat different to this material where melody and acoustic guitar are prominent, accompanying his gentle and insistent voice, not dissimilar to Nick Drake. While Mason pulls off his alt-folk foray well, the EP suffers from being pedestrian in places, with few points of difference to distinguish one song from another. Confusion Cycle and the delicate, introspective The Labyrinth do work, with the guitar playing simple but effective and the vocal matching the mood well. But these songs are the exception and a more dynamic approach was needed to make this music stand out.
