ANIKA MOA: Love In Motion

By Amanda Mills
Anika Moa is not one to rest on her laurels, trying new musical styles with every album, and this one, her fourth, finds her taking on a tougher sound, coloured by banks of electric guitars and vocals. ‘Love In Motion’ is characterised by the theme of love: love gained, remembered and betrayed are all shown here as experiences that have shaped Moa. First single Running Through the Fire sets the tone, with insistent guitar riffs, and Pat Benatar-esque vocals that provide a sense of desperation, though considering Moa wrote this song about her father’s death, it’s no wonder there is torment present. The album’s harder edge doesn’t deny lighter touches, with songs like Love in Motion playing up her layered delicate vocals and ’50s beat. There is room for pop too. Secrets and Lies possesses a melody that could have been on any classic rock album. The songwriting on ‘Love in Motion’ shows a musician finding her niche and further developing her talents, in doing so producing possibly her strongest album yet.
