MAMA TILLY: Silhouettes and Footsteps EP
By Amanda Mills
Wellington-based Mama Tilly have a diverse musical background. Three of the five band members met at Whitireia music school and lead vocalist Mahinarangi Maika was recruited after being met at a music seminar. Most recently added member Ila (Eileen Scott) studied at the NZ School of Music. This debut EP was recorded at Matrix Digital Studios in Wellington, and shows a band with a distinctly rock element to their sound, but unfortunately this is where the interest begins and ends. Somehow, although all four songs on the EP are different in style, their music seems formulaic and repetitive. While the band play with gusto, but little attention is given to the small details that make music interesting. Maika’s vocals are emotive, but come across in places as mannered and overwrought, taking on a dated 1980’s sound on ‘Silhouettes and Footsteps’. Mama Tilly‘s musical genre should allow them the freedom to let loose, but even when given the opportunity, they don’t, choosing instead to keep playing it safe.
