BANDICOOT: Jurassic Warfare

By John Paul Carroll
This three-piece ‘spaz pop’ band from Auckland includes Pearl McGlashan – daughter of Don. Bandicoot bring a lo-fi sound that trades in production and performance panache for loads of energy and attitude, or ‘ener-tude’. All at once this aural interpretation of edgy youth brings together elements of bands like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, ‘Bleach’-period Nirvana and old-school punk bands, to create a sound not unlike our spaz pop flag bearers The Mint Chicks’ early stuff, with angry-girl screaming at the fore. With a clutch of songs with indie-confrontational names like Yr art degree doesn’t mean shit and lyrics to match, it’s just what your shitty teenager wants for Christmas. The standout track must be Bitchface with a grunge/pop hybrid riff, an industrial break down section and the name it ticks all the boxes, including a few boxes that you didn’t know, and possibly didn’t want to know about. Such is the nature of this beast, for it is not meant for the light of heart. Recommended as something a little different to start a fight at the work party this winter.
