NIKO NE ZNA: Niko Ne Zna EP

By Bing Turkby
Fans of Kocani Orkestar and other Balkan gypsy brass bands now have a local group to champion. Niko Ne Zna serve up authentic and twisted gypsy goodness on this eponymous EP. It has a very pretty cover, though beyond it I was actually expecting to hear some hot swing jazz music. Some of the solos are pretty jazzy so no major disappointment anyway. Complete with sax, sousaphone, trumpet, trombone, accordion, percussion and drums, this is a band that came to party. Balkan time signatures, funky brass bass lines, exotic melodies, it’s all good. I have no idea what the band name means, it looks like an anagram that I just can’t figure out. A little mystery is a good thing, all you need to know is that Niko Ne Zna bring the fun times, like the Jews Brothers, or their (recently dismantled) Monkey Records’ label-mates the Benka Borodovsky Bordello Band.
