VARIOUS: Come Fly With Me: Great New Zealand Rock’n’Roll 1964-1972
By Simon Sweetman
Nick Sampson compiled this single disc overview of Kiwi tunes, moving from R’n’B/beat groups through to the slightly psychedelic. It’s an interesting part of our past and Sampson definitely follows on from John Baker’s work with compilations such as ‘Pie Cart Rock’n’Roll’. The first 10 songs are spread across 1964-’68 and take in well known groups such as the La De Das, Larry’s Rebels and Max Merritt & The Meteors. Tracks 11-22 are taken from 1967-’72 and show what happened to some of the same bands (La De Das, Larry’s Rebels) as well as some really zany stuff from House of Nimrod (Psychothartic) and The Gremlin’s great Blast Off 1970. The album closes with probably the best known track on the collection, Blerta’s Dance All Around The World – but it’s fitting. And given some of the kack that gets released in the present day ‘Come Fly With Me’ showcases an era of innovation and many songs that still sound fresh today.
