RUBY SUNS: FIGHT, SOFTLY
By Amanda Mills
From being once a three-piece, The Ruby Suns is confirmed here as being one thoroughly independent Ryan McPhun, helped out on this third album by Bevan Smith (Skallander, Signer), and a former-Ruby Sun, Amee Robinson. It’s a departure from the McPhun’s previous albums with lyrics preoccupied by the intricacies of relationships, and the music, while colourful is fractured and detached, showing a distinct electronica influence. McPhun’s vocals, the sole voice on this album, are now buried a little more in the mix, surrounded by walls of synthesisers and effects. As Closet Astrologer suggests, the material has an international story, with Mingus and Pike and Cranberry inspired by various events and places (and a pit bull mascot) in Seattle, while Closet House began life in Hungary. Beats feature prominently with Dusty Fruit having (digitised) Pacific rhythms underpinning the swirling vocals and music. While the album was performed and produced by McPhun, the influence of Bevan Smith’s electronic wizardry is evident with his pulsing synthesiser prominent throughout the album.
