SACHA VEE: Sacha Vee EP
By Kara Segedin
It’s wrong to judge an album by its cover, but the artwork on Sacha Vee’s record makes no suggestion of the funky jazzy soul sound within. Sacha’s voice and her talented backing musicians are the real highlight here. At 16 she was judged Best Vocalist at the Annual NZ Jazz Festival in Tauranga and since then has played in a number of bands before branching out on a solo career in Wellington. Every part of this CD drips with professionalism, from the artwork to the design and the polished sound. The EP was produced by Sacha and Oakley Grenell, mixed by Benny Tones and Daimon Schwaiger, and mastered by Kelly Hibbert. Her vocals are effortless, mellow and warm with some similarities to Hollie Smith. Honey Bee brings a quiet dub-vibe with a loungy rhythm. Wanna Rely begins sparse with piano, bass and drums, but unfortunately as more instruments are added loses the magic a little – it would be nice to let the vocals stand out more here, but that’s one small flaw on a very strong debut EP.
