PIG OUT: Rave X

By Jacob Connor
It shouldn’t seem radical to revive a musical form that the world at large abandoned 15 years ago, but Pig Out’s defiantly happy hardcore agitates damaged nerve endings in exciting ways. Marie Celeste stated in the last NZM issue that the goal was to help people lose their minds. To achieve this, the duo (Kit Lawrence is the other) utilise frenetic breakbeats, sliced and diced vocal samples, whistles, sirens and fat pythons of synth bass. A geezer sampled in Hype sums it up: ‘I remember old rave, and I’ve just never grown up.’ With a big acid happy face on the cover, the vibe is all early ’90s UK rave. DWM simulates a giant washing machine that leaves this listener feeling well rinsed – you’ll either be transported to ecstasy or suffer an aneurism. Genius hammers keyboard stabs to jar your skeleton loose. The same stabs that get you up on a Friday night could well be torturous by Sunday morning. Now I’m wondering if RX4 is a reference to M.I.A’s XR2. Who Do You Think You Are? has a more spartan indie bent, with a plaintive Lawrence vocal. This is enjoyable because it is so over the top. A bold and singular outing – who’s ready to jump on the rave train?
