JZAMAN: Comfort Zone
By Kate Foster
Establishing a ‘what you see is what you get’ attitude instantly, Auckland based Jzaman’s independently produced and released album delivers by being fun and determined without being preachy or hard done by. On I Don’t Know’ Jzaman offers “I couldn’t run a relay, but in rap I got the stamina” and here is where you’re thankful that in NZ Hip Hop, fine examples such as Jzaman himself are content to be truthful about their circumstances in life with an occasional aural novella thrown in for good measure rather than big noting or trying to be something they are not.
I was already enjoying Comfort Zone on the first lesson no less, when on ‘How Come’ Jzaman deftly drops references to Homer Simpson, Frank Grimes & The Green Mile into the same verse…I’m sold. Tracks are well placed throughout the album with massive ‘Back Against The Wall’ featuring late in the listing to spread a joyous head rush of tempo change provided by fierce vocal expression over soul beats, nothing better. Obviously talented and backed by equally gifted associates, Comfort Zone is vital and refreshing right to the Jurassic 5 flavoured last song, ‘Take It Back’.
