SHERLOCK’S DAUGHTER: Sherlock’s Daughter

By Amanda Mills
Already making waves in Australia, Sherlock’s Daughter are starting to cause ripples here, with their track Song for Old People appearing on alternative radio. Fronted by New Zealander Tanya Horo, Sherlock’s Daughter are a quintet, described as the love child of the fictional Sherlock Holmes and Irene Adler, and they take their story very seriously, weaving tales of adventure and ceremony within smart, hook-laden alternative rock. This, their self-titled debut EP, is an introduction to the band’s sound with the twisting synthesisers, dreamy vocals and propulsive stuttering beats of Kids sitting next to the lower key, harmony-and-marimba filled In the End. Shards of guitar also punctuate the songs, with Sons and Daughters having a harder, fractured feel, while the single Song For Old People is an instantly hummable, harmony drenched track tailor made for radio play. Recorded in Sydney with production, engineering and mixing by Jono Ma (Los Valentinos) ‘Sherlock’s Daughter’ is a melody and harmony fest that deserves plenty of attention. With a debut album on the horizon we’ll be hearing a lot more from Sherlock’s Daughter.
