DRAB DOO RIFFS: Bury Me In Drab EP

By John Paul Carroll
A group fast making a name for themselves in an underground kind of way, the Drab Doo Riffs announced their presence late last year with the release of this 6-track EP which has Spock adorning the cover. And if you think that’s weird, just wait till you hear the music; a mixture of ’50s and ’60s pop, ’70s punk, spaced out special effects and white boy rapping that evokes images of the Munsters on a trip to the beach with Supergroove (which would be appropriate given that the band is a project of Karl Steven, who as well as singing, took care of the recording etc). If the mixture turns you off, this prospectively may not be your cup of tea, and it’s true that this musical journey is not for the faint of heart. In no way is the sound that the Drab Doo Riffs have crafted on this EP mild, and its abrasive musical textures and timbres at once complete the music and divide listening audiences. Still, its all about a bit of fun, innit, and just by the by, did Spock really have a sailor man anchor tattooed on his forearm? The stand out track would have to be E-Street an ode to an unlikely American rock god. Recommended listen for those who consider themselves musically explorative, or enjoy harking back to bygone eras such as the ’60s, albeit in a parallel dimension.
