NADINE LOREN: Living In Wonderland

By Greg Prebble
Opening with a super lightweight Kelly Clarkson-ish song called Cyberspace, ‘Living In Wonderland’ continues with 10 more catchy, girly-pop tunes that typically have elements of Alanis Morrissette and Garbage. This Swiss-born Kiwi singer/songwriter is currently based in New York and her album has been out in the States for over a year – in mid ’09 it was a nominee for Best Pop Album of the Year at the 2009 LA Music Awards. Look Me In The Diamonds has a contagious chorus, Bang Bang starts with a Jack and Jill verse in allusion to Wall St’s fallen, Wonderland has a more rocky feel and a little breathy French vocal. There are moments of dreamy vocals with an operatic twist as the drums kick in on Big City and Blackbird. While deliberately light and fluffy this is a nice pop album with well-composed backing for Loren’s capable vocals and enough subtleties to keep it interesting.
