KAIZEN MOFOS: Kaizen Mofos EP
By Jonny Carson
With the angst of pubescent teens fuelled with political propaganda you could imagine Kaizen Mofos sporting mohawks and metal studded jewellery. You certainly wouldn’t expect this punk rock four-piece to be modest, working class men including an engineer and an electronics serviceman –. the Mofos’ debut six-track EP is a balls-to-the-wall punk rock onslaught. Produced on a shoestring at Audio Centric studio in Christchurch, the band had only one ‘hell-for-leather’ day to track the EP. Despite the time/money limitations the production is remarkably slick, staying true to the raw sound of old-school punk, but unfortunately it lacks in the conviction department. The EP is fairly relentless from opening track Soldier – a classic power-chord progression reminiscent of early Pennywise, to ska rock number New Sound, until a slight reprieve comes courtesy of the more melodic Punk Rock Show. The songs are catchy, guitars distorted, drums fast, and vocals tinged with the American accent of lead vocalist Andrew Pearson who is from Tennessee – all ingredients for a credible punk rock release. And while Kaizen Mofos scrape in at credible, their debut is not in-credible enough to stand out from the punk pack.
