COACH: The Coach EP
By Shaun Chait
Coach are a three-piece, two of whom are fresh out of the Auckland Uni jazz school. Moody jazz rock combines with roots, blues, psychedelic and experimental and/or ambient influences. There is a certain rawness to this recording that gives it a nice little swagger. They wear their influences pretty strongly on their sleeves, however I don’t necessarily mind that if there’s a good tune to be had as an outcome. While you most likely need to be on drugs to enjoy the weakest track Dr Strangelove, closer Still Warm is my pick of the four here with its swirling rock climax. Life Coach (which I could imagine TrinityRoots playing back when they were just Trinity) is the other strong track here. Self-recorded and produced, mostly live, over three days, it’s promising game start for Coach.
