TIM FINN: North, South, East, West….Anthology
By Tony Parker
As the title suggests this double disc draws from all four corners of Tim Finn’s 35 year musical journey and like any good anthology it’s not just the well known songs that matter. This is no greatest hits package though – even if there is a healthy cross section of Split Enz, solo, Crowded House and Finn Brothers’ material. The Enz era kicks off proceedings as you would expect and features the first of a number of remakes with a Missy Higgins duet on Stuff and Nonsense. Interestingly the songs selected from ‘Woodface’ have also been re-recorded, distancing themselves from that record. Weather With You is turned into an understated acoustic collaboration with Neil and Liam Finn. Given the same treatment is a duet with Bic Runga on It’s Only Natural while How Will You Go becomes a beautiful piano ballad. The solo stuff covers the popular bases – Fraction Too Much Friction, Persuasion, How’m I Gonna Sleep – yet also manages to include some deeper cuts from his latter solo albums along with a couple of newly recorded songs. As an anthology it holds together well and while there will be quibbles about song selection it’s an excellent overview of one artist’s journey from Te Awamutu to the world.
