REGAN PERRY: Wiser

By Lisa Rapley
At first glance this CD is surrounded in mystery. A simple black cover with a white guitar shaped tree silhouette, it’s hard to know whose album it is. But the imagery creates the idea of a roots record, which is the cornerstone sound on Regan Perry’s debut album. Self-produced with assistance from Mike Nielson who has worked with U2, Bjork and Jamiroquai, the album is laid-back and an easy-listen. Having being part of the group Cornerstone Roots, this is Regan Perry’s first foray into going solo. The singer/songwriter has given his soul, roots and reggae style a very distinctive Kiwi spin – especially shown in the second single I Got A Girl. A mixture of instruments are used to create his distinct sounds including, flute, guitar (acoustic and electric), piano, ukulele and percussion, some of which sound out of place at first, but with further listens somehow fit right in. The 17-track album is released through his own independent label NR Records. Including two versions of the first single Wiser and a hidden track, it is as down-to-earth as Perry himself and happily showcases his small town NZ roots.
