JAN HELLRIEGEL: All Grown Up
By Lisa Rapley
It’s been 14 years since one-time ‘westie girl’ Jan Hellriegel last released a record and here she is back with her third album, purposefully titled ‘All Grown Up’. The too-long absent Auckland singer/songwriter is backed throughout by an excellent five-piece band, with an array of strings and a choir on the final song Goodbye Adieu. She could likely have gone in any number of directions but Hellriegel has stuck with a pop sound – not the over-hyped pop of today’s teenage talent, rather a subdued, reflective and mature pop with jazz undertones and rock instrumentals that draw out a few songs. Her lyrics reflect the grown-up (or growing up) theme of the album and most tracks make you feel like you could sway to them all day long, with or without a candle held in the air. Highlights among the 13 tracks include opener 10 Years and 47 Minutes and 2x2, which are slightly more upbeat, yet continue with the relaxing overtone of the album. The record was produced by Geoff Matthews, Wayne Bell and Hellriegel herself and is released on her own Blind Date Records.
