SONS OF ZION: Sons of Zion

By Robecca Leydon
Kudos to a band who have been independently producing all of their own, original music since they first entered the music scene in 2007. Sons of Zion stake their claim in the NZ roots scene with the release of this self-titled album. The two singles Be With You and Waiting Right Here are great hooks into this easy-going, surprisingly experimental album. Mixing up a bit of roots, reggae and even old school rock, the band present a sound that is unique and pleasant on the ears. I especially like track three Forward Movement, with its awesome guitar riff that reminds one of all things funk. The smooth voice and lyrics of lead singer Samuel Eriwata float over the earthy melody, tying it all in nicely. Keep On Skankin’ is highly reminiscent of Katchafire with a sexy and smooth R&B twist. Recorded at York St Studios and produced and engineered by the band themselves, this is the perfect album for summer, beaches and bbqs. Encompassing you in their friendly and happy vibe, the six-piece almost sound like your best friends.
