BRILLEAUX: Decade
By Simon Sweetman
Marking the first decade of music by Brilleaux, ‘Decade’ delivers the essence of this funky bar-room R’n’B combo. With six albums to their name before this collection, Brilleaux is a well-honed unit. The stonking cover of The Rolling Stones’ Live With Me is both a tribute to so many influences and antecedents that inform the band’s sound as well as simply a great new lick of paint on one of the old houses standing proud. The original songs are confident also, competently played with Graham Clark’s harmonica bursting in and around the guitars of Bruce Rolands and the keyboards from Tim Julian. The rhythm section of Ian Beano Gilpin on drums and Brian Franks on bass are clearly inspired by the Blues Brothers Band and quality blues-rock/R’n’B combos from the late 1970s through to the early ’90s. It’s a strong summation of the band’s career so far. Fans will be happy.
