THE CASINO RIOT: A Lesson Learnt

By Kate Foster
There’s no disputing the absolute honesty and sincerity that The Casino Riot, (formerly named Sinfura) bring to their debut release ‘A Lesson Learnt’. Four tracks in Aside from Me is a quick way to access this album’s quality and conversely The Wait is for me the lowlight track. It is completely possible that I’m getting a little bit long in the tooth, or maybe I’ve just loved the bands that influence new groups like The Casino Riot for a really long time. Nothing stands out as being terrible and perversely, perhaps therein lays this album’s issue. It’s accomplished but standardised punk/metal and a touch of screamo swathed in some catchy pop moments. It is certainly well executed and enjoyable to listen to on the whole, but where’s the danger? Where’s that ‘mad, bad and dangerous to know’ factor that Dylan McKay so skilfully wooed Brenda Walsh with. Original 90210 references? Okay, I am too old. What I’m trying to say is, The Casino Riot are very talented and with experience and more sweaty tour bus lessons they will likely become a formidable future proponent of the genre.
