SIGNER: Next We Bring The Fire
By Amanda Mills
Bevan Smith has his fingers in a number of pies – as part of Skallander, Over The Atlantic, and latterly The Ruby Suns. His solo work has been divided between his two pseudonyms, Aspen and Signer, and his latest album under the latter name marks a change for Signer’s music. This time Smith has focused on structured songs in addition to free form electronica and techno, with Comb Your Hair showing a pop-inspired melody. Don’t Be A Forest Cow features very dreamy vocals over a varied soundscape, punctuated with techno beats, while +Kicks and Kicks possesses washes of pulsing synths, hypnotic beats and a vocal line that is more riff than melody. Help has come from Matthew Mitchell (Skallander), Ryan McPhun (The Ruby Suns), and Jeremy Coubrough of Mandrake. ‘Next We Bring You the Fire’ is full of space, with plenty of contrast between the harder and softer sounds. Already released in America to positive notices it expands and develops on his more established electronica sounds.
