MAHONEY HARRIS: But They Do EP
By Amanda Mills
Mahoney Harris bought her first guitar in New York in 1996, quickly finding her way around it, penning songs and performing around the Big Apple. Relocating to Sydney in 2000, Harris toured as support to Leonardo’s Bride and released an album called ‘Here for Now’. This five song EP shows her flair for personal and tuneful folk-infused pop, with particularly strong performances and songwriting on the laid-back Maybe You Knew and the lilting title track which features intriguing slide guitar courtesy of Billy Squire. Harris’ band, which includes Wayne Bell on banjo and Garageland drummer Paul Taylor, plays her material well, complementing her striking vocals. ‘But They Do’ was recorded and mixed by guitarist Tom Healy in his home studio. The main surprise here is Harris’ voice, which lifts the music to another level, recalling country-pop singer/songwriters of the late 1960s and early 1970s. The voice is charming, honest and beguiling – one that might not be heard on the radio, but should.
