LINN LORKIN: In The Land Of Music
By Simon Sweetman
I have enjoyed the recent work of Linn Lorkin; she does a fine line in kitsch and Kiwiana but she’s a great singer and her songs have a mood to them, always. She can switch gears too, effortlessly, pushing humour and sincerity – sometimes in the same song. Here we have ‘In The Land Of Music’– and album that was originally released on vinyl in 1986. It features many of New Zealand’s session legends (Martin Winch, guitar; Carl Doy, piano; Bill Kristian, bass; Brian Smith, saxophone; Frank Gibson Jr, drums) and there are strings and horns from the NZ Symphony Orchestra. The digital update serves the songs well – often Lorkin is celebrating the very art she’s practising, singing about music; backing up the title’s claims as she places herself firmly, but never squarely (if you catch my drift) in the land of music.
