BLACK SAND DIVA: Chameleon
By Amanda Mills
Black Sand Diva formed just 10 months ago, changing what was originally a solo album for vocalist Catherine Tunks into a collaborative effort. Jazz musicians play a major part in the band, with drummer Jason Orme, bassist Dave Hodkinson (Mojave), pianist Kiri Kainamu Wheeler, and guitarist Joel Vinsen all part of the band, along with guest performances from Mojave’s flautist Trudy Lile and concert guitarist Jon Sanders. ‘Chameleon’ is an apt name for this debut – the album changes ‘colours’ rapidly, with no dominant style emerging, incorporating jazz and rock, while utilising reggae (Barflies), Latin rhythms (Samba de Piha) and straightforward pop (Gypsy). Unfortunately, this makes the record scattered, Black Sand Diva perhaps spreading themselves too thin in trying to find their niche. While I very much like the warm tones and appreciate the considerable musical talent the album doesn’t quite gel. As they become more focused Black Sand Diva will likely become a significant player on our music scene.
