PROJECT BORIS: Project Boris
By Ania Glowacz
Project Boris is the pet project of Mike McKenna and is a bit of fun. McKenna – ex-bass player for Skin Machine and Shylock – does all the music, but has roped in some capable mates to embellish his wry and often witty experiments. Vox are covered equally by Matt Shepherd and Yimmy (Jim Palmer). I especially like the opening track Monday Mourning with its British geezer voice. Yimmy also wrote lyrics for half the tunes along with Mark Heyward. Recorded in Kamo, this is a relaxed freeform affair with some quirks and a few surprises. There’s a Girls Vs Boys vibe on Obesity Trauma, an almost bagpipe guitar sound on Yeah Mate, a Korn flavour on Skitz, bossanova and Bowie (yes, really) on On The Blink, and a more contemporary Pearl Jam sound on Cozy. This may be a post-metal rehab therapy project, but as far as that goes, it doesn’t take itself too seriously and is worth the listen. A relaxed hybrid with some nice guitar.
