DIMMER: Degrees of Existence
By John Carroll
Dimmer is the current mode of sonic transportation that Kiwi rock royalty Shayne Carter is using to purvey his work to the masses, a group well known and celebrated for their minimalist arrangements, infectious grooves and general outside of the box-ishness that renders them the epitome of the word ‘distinctive’ in so far as New Zealand music is concerned. The latest offering from the Dimmer camp is entitled ‘Degrees of Existence’ and comes complete with a stark landscape of the moon for its cover art, a promising introduction indeed. And though the music is as outside of as many boxes as you can think of, and a lot of the same ingredients are there as in Dimmer’s past conquests, ‘Degrees of Existence’ doesn’t quite capture the enigmatic essence portrayed by the cover art of the album. What you should expect from this album are productions that gently push the boundaries, rhythms that hold down the fort and vocal and guitar arrangements that hark back to the much celebrated Dunedin sound, rather than forging onward toward something new.
