VARIOUS ARTISTS: Separation City (Soundtrack)

By Amanda Mills
Samuel Flynn Scott and Luke Buda are the songwriting nucleus of The Phoenix Foundation, and between them have released four solo albums along with their band output, which includes the Eagle Vs. Shark soundtrack. Separation City was partly filmed in Wellington, and the soundtrack reads as a who’s who of the city’s music scene, taking tracks from some of the capital’s best-known musicians. The majority of the collection is made up of Scott and Buda’s incidental music, which veers from the acoustic magic of Wedding at Boom Rock to the melancholic piano and strings balladry of Nipples to the slightly cheesy Casiotones of Hotel Hoffenstoffer. The instrumentals let up for Scott to provide vocals for Happy in the Trees, which would work well (unsurprisingly) on any of the Phoenix Foundation albums. The stand alone songs are an interesting choice, placing together the indie pop of Phoenix Foundation’s stellar Bright Grey, reggae tinge of The Black Seeds’ Come to Me and the pulsing ’80s dance electronica of SJD’s Night Club. W While disparate in parts the soundtrack does include some truly gorgeous music.
