FLY MY PRETTIES: A Story
By Martyn Pepperell
Since its inception as a concept in 2004 Barnaby Weir’s Fly My Pretties multimedia showcase events/releases have been one of those phenomena that people seem to wholeheartedly get, or completely miss the point of. For sure the 2009 edition has proven to be no different. Impressively packaged, ‘A Story’ is composed of three pieces, a tiered act if you will. Firstly we have the CD, which collects live recordings of 14 songs from the 2009 tour; songs which were assembled over the course of eight prior rehearsals. As with the live shows themselves, of particular note here is newcomer L.A Mitchell’s I’m Alive in the World and Wellington veteran Rio Hunuki-Hemopo’s Down to the Sea, which in singular fashion is a very unique Aotearoanised take on low-slung southern funk. Next piece of the act is a DVD containing live footage, a documentary, a photo gallery and various bonus files. The discs are complimented by a booklet of liner notes/credits – all very good stuff if you are a FMP enthusiast. And that’s the thing, ‘A Story’ is very much for those who attended and loved the latest tour.
